Findings Timeline Tutorial
This tutorial walks you through setting up and using the Findings Timeline β the built-in Gantt chart view that shows all your findings on a date-based horizontal bar chart.
Step 1: Access the Timeline
- Open the app and make sure you have the correct project selected (use Change Project in the Profile tab if needed).
- Tap the Findings tab in the bottom navigation bar.
- Tap the Timeline tab at the top of the Findings screen.
The chart loads all findings that have both a Start Date and a Due Date.
Step 2: Set Up Findings for the Timeline
For a finding to appear as a bar on the timeline, it needs both a Start Date and a Due Date.
- Open any finding (or create a new one).
- In the finding detail screen, locate the Start Date and Due Date fields.
- Set the Start Date to when work on this finding begins (or was discovered).
- Set the Due Date to the deadline for resolving the finding.
- Save the finding.
Tip
It is good practice to set start and due dates when you first create a finding, especially during planning phases. This gives you the full scheduling view from the beginning of the project.
Step 3: Read the Chart
Once findings have dates, return to the Timeline tab. The chart shows:
- Horizontal axis: calendar dates with month labels and weekly grid lines
- Vertical axis: swim lanes grouped by System Category (YachtInspect) or Status (QuickInspect)
- Red vertical line: today's date marker
Each bar spans from its Start Date to its Due Date. The bar color indicates the current status of the finding (see the Findings Timeline feature page for the full color reference).
Step 4: Use Collapsible Groups
The timeline groups findings by category. If you have many findings, collapse groups you are not currently focused on:
- Tap the group header row to toggle it collapsed or expanded.
- The header shows the group name and the count of findings in that group.
- Collapsed groups hide their bars, reducing vertical scroll.
Step 5: Check the Summary Stats Bar
The stats bar at the top of the chart always shows the current project totals:
- Open count
- In Progress count
- Overdue count (due date passed, not yet closed)
- Closed count
Use this bar to get a quick project health overview without scrolling through the chart.
Step 6: Navigate to Today
If you have scrolled far forward or backward in time, tap the Today button to snap the chart back to today's date. This is useful in long-running projects where the chart spans many months.
Step 7: Navigate to a Finding
Tap any bar on the chart to navigate directly to that finding's detail screen. From there you can update the status, add comments, change dates, or attach photos.
Tips for Effective Timeline Management
- Use consistent Start Dates aligned with project phase start dates so findings group visually by phase on the chart.
- Review overdue findings first β they appear with a red tint and warning icon, making them easy to spot.
- Update due dates proactively when scope changes to keep the timeline accurate.
- Collapse closed groups to focus attention on active work.
