Hazardous Materials Management
The Hazardous Materials Management module lets you maintain a digital registry of hazardous substances across your operations, aligned with EU REACH regulations. Track GHS classifications, store safety data sheets, link substances to risk assessments, and manage substitution decisions β all within the app.
Note
Hazardous Materials Management is available to users with Standard, Key User, and Admin roles. Free-tier users have read-only access.
Accessing the Hazmat Module
Navigate to the HSE section in the main navigation and select Hazardous Materials, or access it from the project menu. The hazmat registry is scoped to the current company and shared across all projects.
Hazmat Registry
The registry is the central hub for all hazardous substances in your organization. Each substance entry includes:
- Substance name and common synonyms
- CAS number (Chemical Abstracts Service identifier)
- GHS classification with pictograms and hazard categories
- Risk level (High, Medium, Low) based on the substance's hazard profile
- Storage and handling requirements
- Exposure limits (OELs, TWA, STEL values)
Adding a Substance
- Tap the + button in the Hazmat Registry
- Enter the substance name and CAS number
- Select the applicable GHS classifications
- Set the risk level and add any notes
- Optionally upload the Safety Data Sheet for AI extraction
Tip
Upload the original SDS PDF to allow AI extraction of hazard classifications and exposure limits. This saves manual data entry and reduces transcription errors.
Safety Data Sheets
Each substance can have one or more Safety Data Sheets (SDS) attached:
- PDF upload: Store the original SDS document alongside the substance record
- AI extraction: The system can automatically extract key fields from uploaded SDS documents, including hazard statements, precautionary statements, exposure limits, and first aid measures
- Version tracking: Keep multiple SDS versions with date stamps to ensure you always reference the current sheet
GHS Classification
The module supports all 9 GHS pictogram categories:
| Pictogram | Hazard Class |
|---|---|
| Flame | Flammable substances |
| Flame over circle | Oxidizing substances |
| Exploding bomb | Explosive substances |
| Skull and crossbones | Acute toxicity (severe) |
| Corrosion | Corrosive substances |
| Exclamation mark | Irritant / lower-level hazards |
| Health hazard | Serious health hazards (CMR, STOT) |
| Environment | Hazardous to aquatic environment |
| Gas cylinder | Gases under pressure |
Each substance can have multiple GHS classifications. The module displays the appropriate pictograms alongside each registry entry for quick visual identification.
Hazard and Precautionary Statements
For each classification, you can record:
- H-statements (Hazard statements): Describe the nature and degree of hazard (e.g., H225 "Highly flammable liquid and vapour")
- P-statements (Precautionary statements): Recommended measures to minimize exposure and harm (e.g., P210 "Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources")
Risk Assessment Integration
Hazardous substances can be linked directly to risk assessments, creating a closed-loop compliance workflow:
- When conducting a risk assessment for an activity, select relevant hazardous substances from the registry
- The substance's hazard profile and exposure limits are automatically available in the risk assessment context
- Control measures can reference specific handling and storage requirements from the SDS
- Changes to a substance's classification automatically flag linked risk assessments for review
This integration ensures that risk assessments always reflect the current hazard data for the substances involved.
Substitution Tracking
Under EU REACH, companies have an obligation to consider substituting hazardous substances with safer alternatives where feasible. The module supports:
- Substitution candidates: Record potential replacement substances for high-risk materials
- Decision documentation: Document the rationale for substitution decisions (or decisions not to substitute)
- Timeline tracking: Track substitution deadlines and milestones
- Status workflow: Move substitutions through stages from Identified to Evaluated to Implemented or Rejected
Regulatory Compliance
The Hazardous Materials module aligns with EU REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals):
- Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) flagging for candidate list substances
- Authorization requirements tracking for Annex XIV substances
- Restriction compliance checks against Annex XVII conditions
- Compliance notes with conditional guidance based on your configured regulatory framework
Tip
Configure your country-specific regulatory framework in Settings to receive tailored compliance guidance. The system adapts its recommendations based on whether you operate under German BetrSichV, UK HSE, or other national implementations of REACH.
